Report: Illinois, Chicago Released Over 500 Criminal Illegal Aliens Despite ICE Detainers

A House Judiciary Committee interim report shows that Illinois and Chicago, both considered sanctuary jurisdictions, released over 500 illegal aliens despite ICE detainers.

“Over the past 20 months alone, illegal aliens have gone on to commit murder, domestic violence, and robbery after the Chicago Police Department (CPD) released them back onto Illinois streets in defiance of ICE detainers,” according to the report.

Illinois’s sanctuary status began during President Donald Trump’s term when then-Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law restricting “cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration officials and undermined federal detainer requests.”

In 2021, current Gov. JB Pritzker strengthened Rauner’s law, prohibiting local governments from signing contracts with ICE and forbidding ‘officials from inquiring about the citizenship or immigration status of an individual in custody unless they’re presented with a federal criminal warrant, or otherwise required by federal law.’”

Chicago’s sanctuary status began in 2012, with an update in 2021:

prohibits city agencies, including the Chicago Police Department, from: [d]etaining, arresting, or continuing to hold anyone solely based on their immigration status or civil immigration warrants[;] [t]ransferring individuals to ICE custody for civil immigration enforcement[;] [a]ssisting federal immigration authorities in any civil enforcement operations, such as providing traffic perimeters, on-site support, or sharing detention information[;] [i]ncluding immigration-related questions in city agency forms or maintaining records of a person’s status; it also removes “citizen” terminology in official code, replacing it with inclusive language such as “person” or “resident[.]”

The report found:

  • Nearly 100 criminal aliens released by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) in 2024 and 2025.
  • 408 criminal aliens released by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) in 2025 instead of honoring ICE detainers.

Yeah, CCSO never honored an ICE detainer in 2025. In January 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) released an Ecuadorian illegal alien accused of assault and luring a child. The CPD ignored the ICE detainer.

More:

These releases include a Mexican national sentenced to 30 years in IDOC custody for attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault with bodily harm, and aggravated kidnapping; a Mexican national convicted of attempted murder with intent to kill; and a Mexican national sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment for assault on a child. IDOC also previously released a Jamaican national who had served 28 years in prison for murder.

The illegal alien later robbed and murdered a man after his release.

A month later, CPD arrested an illegal alien for domestic violence. ICE issued a detainer that same day.

CPD released the illegal alien.

A year later, the CPD arrested the man again for domestic violence and “three counts of resisting a peace officer.”

The Cook County Jail didn’t honor another ICE detainer for an illegal alien, who was subsequently released. That illegal alien ended up arrested and accused of “criminal sexual assault and abuse of a minor.”

In 2019, the CPD released a Mexican national accused of theft instead of honoring the ICE detainer.

Right after his release, he allegedly “lured a 3-year-old girl into a McDonald’s bathroom and sexually assaulted her.”

The report then dives into murders and other deaths caused by illegal aliens who should have been deported:

  • March 2026: Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman murdered by Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal alien from Venezuela. The Biden administration released Medina-Medina at the border in 2023. Months later, police arrested him for shoplifting. He murdered Gorman three years later.
  • January 2025: Katie Abraham, a student at Ohio University, was killed in a car crash by Julio Cucol Bol, an illegal alien from Guatemala, because he drove drunk.
