‘F*** you…hurry up and die’: Swing-Seat Democrat’s Digital Trail Reveals Radical Politics

Before launching his campaign to represent Michigan’s 7th congressional district, Democratic nominee William Lawrence, an activist who co-founded the Sunrise Movement, a climate action organization, deleted hundreds of his past social media posts. Because he is fighting to unseat a Republican incumbent in a swing district, Lawrence has cast himself as a moderate. Unfortunately for him, those posts have resurfaced, exposing a far-left record that tells a very different story.

CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski took a deep dive into Lawrence’s digital history:

William Lawrence, the Democratic nominee in one of the country’s most competitive House races in Michigan, deleted hundreds of old social media posts in which he embraced police and prison abolition, called for nationalizing fossil-fuel companies to end their production, attacked moderate Democrats and argued for a “fundamental overhaul” of the Constitution.

Other deleted posts show Lawrence writing “f**k” the nuclear-family home and calling it an “isolating, individualistic, violent way of organizing society,” envisioning “a world of free and open migration,” and calling to “Abolish the Senate.”

Lawrence even wrote a song inspired by moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s resistance to Democrats’ climate agenda: “Our generation says f**k you for everything,” Lawrence wrote in lyrics he posted in December 2021. “Hurry up and die so that we can get started.”

In the posts below, Kaczynski highlights some of Lawrence’s most revealing remarks [Language warning]:

The Washington Free Beacon recently reported that during a January 2024 episode of his podcast Hegemonicon, Lawrence called for “destroying the American way of life.”

During a discussion with Marxist-aligned guests about consumerism and climate change, Lawrence “chuckling” said:

I’m wondering how we can inspire a sense of abundance for people in the United States, while frankly, destroying the American way of life and the negative connotations and material realities that has come to mean.

Lawrence will face Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in November. Barrett won the open seat in 2024 after its previous occupant, Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, left to run for the Senate.

Kaczynski calls this race “one of the country’s truest House battleground tests.” He noted that President Donald Trump won the district by 2 points in 2024.

The limited polling conducted so far in this race has been sponsored entirely by Democratic groups. An August survey from Global Strategy Group showed Lawrence leading Barrett by 2 points, 49% to 47%, while June polls gave Barrett a 1-point advantage.

Given how close the race is, the trove of profane and radical posts from Lawrence’s past could prove costly — and he has already begun trying to explain them away. For starters, he told CNN’s Manu Raju he let his Democratic Socialists of America membership “lapse” … in July.

In a recent statement to CNN, he wrote:

Like many millennials, I’ve done my fair share of thinking out loud on the internet. I’ve been clear that I disagree today with some things I posted in the past. I don’t support defunding the police or open borders. I don’t agree with my previous statement about Senator Slotkin, who has been fiercely critical of the Trump administration’s war in Iran and is doing essential work to protect the integrity of the upcoming election. I remain a staunch critic of the political status quo, and the obscene concentration of wealth and power that corrupts our politics and leaves working people unrepresented.

In an August interview with Semafor, Lawrence claimed his past support for defunding the police is “out of step with what I believe now.” Of course it is now that he’s running in a purple district.

Finally, he spoke at a July rally with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Lansing, Michigan. I wonder if that was before or after he let his DSA membership lapse.

Lawrence can insist that he’s evolved, but voters are entitled to judge him by the record he created, rather than the false moderate facade he has adopted for a competitive general election. His support for police and prison abolition, open migration, nationalizing energy companies and dismantling traditional institutions was not confined to a single ill-considered post; it formed a consistent ideological pattern. Whatever label Lawrence now prefers, his own words reveal his support for the DSA agenda.

Barrett can win if he relentlessly exposes Lawrence’s radical past every day from now through the election.
