Friday morning’s proceedings in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial ended on a dramatic cliffhanger: Judge William Sullivan announced that he intended to declare a mistrial after the jury reported for the third time that it could not reach a unanimous verdict.
The jury, which has deliberated for seven days, sent the judge a note stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we report we are unable to come to a unanimous decision and will not be able to.” The apparent deadlock is 11–1.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that the holdout juror was refusing to follow the law and asked Sullivan either to question him further or replace him with one of the six alternates. Sullivan declined, saying the jury’s note did not establish that the juror was refusing to follow the court’s instructions.
When Sullivan announced that he would declare a mistrial, Reddington asked him to delay the formal ruling so the defense could seek emergency intervention from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Sullivan agreed to hold off, and Reddington filed an emergency appeal.

Court resumed at 2 p.m. on Friday. After announcing that Reddington’s emergency appeal had been rejected by the Massachusetts Supreme Court, Judge Sullivan formally declared a mistrial.
Prosecutors must now decide whether to retry Clancy, negotiate a plea agreement, or dismiss the charges.
The Clancy trial lasted nearly seven weeks overall, beginning with jury selection on July 20, 2026, and ending in a mistrial on Sept. 4. The evidentiary portion lasted about five weeks, followed by seven days of jury deliberations.
When I first heard there was a lone holdout, I assumed one of the jury’s nine women was trying to protect Lindsay Clancy from spending the rest of her life in prison. But when Reddington sought to have that juror removed, the reality sank in: Eleven jurors apparently favored acquittal, while only one believed Clancy should be held criminally responsible for murdering her three children.
