Major California school district faces catastrophe as over 1,000 students suddenly disappear
A major California school district is facing a potentially costly enrollment crisis after nearly 1,200 students unexpectedly vanished from its rolls.
The drop at San Juan Unified School District was nearly four times what officials anticipated for the new school year, according to Abridged.
The district had budgeted a modest decline of 317 students for the 2026-27 school year, but enrollment estimates eight days into classes showed the actual loss was closer to 1,200.
The sudden 2% drop could have serious financial consequences for the Sacramento County district, a large portion of state funding is tied to daily student attendance.
Initial estimates suggest San Juan Unified could lose as much as $3.7 million in revenue this school year, district spokesperson Raj Rai told the outlet.
California’s funding calculations account for attendance over multiple years, so the financial hole could eventually swell to $10.4 million.
District officials are now trying to determine why so many more students disappeared from classrooms than anticipated.
“We’re starting to look more closely at the data to better understand what may be contributing to the larger-than-anticipated decline,” Rai said. “We’re also hearing from some neighboring districts that they have experienced unexpected enrollment declines this year.”
San Juan Unified — which serves Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Citrus Heights and Orangevale — has roughly 50,000 students and is California’s seventh-largest school district.
