Why Explore a Career in Tax Law?

Tax is one of the most specialised and commercially relevant areas of legal practice — but it can be difficult for law students to understand what tax lawyers actually do.

A career in Tax Law can involve:

  • Advising businesses on GST, Customs and tax implications
  • Researching and resolving complex classification and valuation issues
  • Handling tax investigations and regulatory proceedings
  • Drafting responses to Show Cause Notices
  • Representing clients in tax litigation and appeals
  • Working on transactions involving international trade and cross-border taxation
  • Building expertise in a practice area where specialised legal knowledge is highly valued

This workshop is designed to give you a realistic look at this career before you decide whether Tax Law is the right specialisation for you.

Career opportunities are growing:

LinkedIn regularly features openings across Indirect Tax, GST, Customs, Tax Litigation and Tax Advisory, with opportunities at law firms, Big 4s, consulting firms and in-house legal/tax teams.

The workshop will be conducted by Shambhavi Mishra, Associate Partner at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (LKS), and will focus on how lawyers approach indirect tax matters in practice- from classifying products and understanding tax implications to handling investigations, litigation and advising clients.

By the End of this Workshop, You Will Be Able To:

  • Understand how lawyers approach GST and Customs classification in real-world transactions.
  • Learn how to navigate the Customs Tariff, HSN, Chapter Notes and General Rules of Interpretation through practical examples.
  • Understand how GST and Customs disputes arise, how investigations are conducted, and what a lawyer’s role is at different stages.
  • Learn to read and understand important litigation documents such as Show Cause Notices and adjudication orders.
  • Understand the Customs and GST appellate process, from the initial dispute through the higher appellate forums.
  • Get a practical understanding of the difference between Tax Advisory and Tax Litigation and the kind of work lawyers undertake in each.

Why are we organising this workshop?

At Lawctopus Law School, we believe that students should be able to explore a legal practice area by understanding what the work actually looks like, rather than simply studying its theoretical framework.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn directly from a practicing tax lawyer and get a practical introduction to GST, Customs, Classification, Investigation, Litigation and Tax careers.

If you are curious about what happens behind the scenes when lawyers handle indirect tax matters, this workshop is a great place to start.

Register now and explore Indirect Tax in practice.
