As desensitized as we have become to youth violence in our cities, every so often an attack is so ruthless and depraved that it shocks even the most hardened among us. The mob attack on a group of female York College students sitting on the front porch of their off-campus rental home caught our attention.
The September 12 assault began after a group of up to 30 youths gathered outside the students’ home following what authorities described as an illegal street takeover.
According to Fox 43, the students called 911 four times before the violence began.
After a street racer struck a parked car, the students asked the crowd to leave their property. A black female teenager then stepped onto the porch and threw the first punch. Others quickly piled on. Video shows members of the mob dragging the students by their hair and brutally beating them.
As the attack unfolded, one of the students placed a fifth call to police. Officers finally arrived, prompting the crowd to disperse.
One of the students told Fox 43, “After the first punch was given, all these girls started to rush us, and that’s where it kind of gets blurry because I think people were coming at me… I turn and see my friend get dragged by her hair down our porch steps and disappear. My other friend got dragged by her hair.”
The outlet reported that the students were punched, kicked, maced, and one even lost consciousness — twice — during the savage assault.

Despite the uncivilized nature of the incident, it took police a week to make the first arrests in this case.
So, what was the delay?
While police have not released an official racial breakdown of the attackers or the three juveniles charged, nor is the racial identity of every person in the mob clearly discernible from the footage, the video appears to show at least a predominantly black group assaulting the white female students.
As much as our progressive brethren would prefer that we ignore it, the racial dynamic of this attack has not escaped the attention of those who watched the video. And that would include Harmeet Dhillon, U.S. assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
In a Sunday social media post, Dhillon wrote that her office is “aware of this situation” and “has been in touch with and tracking local law enforcement efforts on this since it happened last week. Cannot comment further.”
Although many on the Left insist that only white people can be racist, evidence from everyday life says otherwise. Racial prejudice is not confined to any one group: people of every race are capable of judging, mistreating, or attacking others because of their skin color. Acknowledging that reality should not be controversial — nor should applying the same legal standards regardless of the races of the perpetrators and victims.

The racial identities of the attackers and victims do not, by themselves, prove a hate crime. But given the savagery of the assault, the apparent racial dynamic, and the troubling delay in making any arrests, the possibility of a racial motive deserves a thorough investigation. Had the races been reversed, the story would have dominated media coverage for days — or far longer.
Equal justice demands that the question of whether the attack of a largely — if not entirely — black mob on white college students was a hate crime.

A black woman in York, Pennsylvania, said she was “personally offended” that officials called violent porch attackers “uncivilized”.

At the meeting the woman said, “To me, that feels like you’re saying that the juveniles in this incident are uncivilized, and I am personally offended by that analogy.”
She asked what the college would do to check the behavior of the white students living off campus. Yep – she actually tried to blame the white kids for the violence of the black attackers. And the media gave her a platform.
