In this product demonstration with Legal IT Insider, NetDocuments‘ director of legal AI solutions, Brandall Nelson, showcases the new AI-powered Tabular Review capability that was launched in August this year.
Before joining NetDocuments, Nelson was an associate at Freshfields and then transportation company Savage, and he observed: “I worked in a large international law firms for many years before moving in-house to a small corporate and there’s many use cases all across the board for Tabular Review.”
Users go into a matter in NetDocuments and check all of the documents that are required for the review, then asking AI to create a table. You can add your own columns or ask AI to create columns eg “a column for review of precedent purchase agreement,” or something more complex.
In the demo, the set of purchase agreements is analysed using AI-generated columns covering key information such as parties, purchase price, payment terms, closing conditions, governing law and termination rights.
Once extraction is run, NetDocuments rapidly reviews every document and populates the table with structured results. Crucially, when information cannot be found, the system returns “not found” rather than generating an answer, helping lawyers maintain confidence in the results. Every extracted value can also be traced back to its source through citations, allowing users to quickly verify findings and review surrounding contractual language. Nelson said: “I remember as a junior lawyer doing this sort of work and trying to get extracts from previous transactions and it really took hours out of my day that wasn’t billable. Now with the push of a button you can do it in seconds.”
The session also demonstrates how teams can standardise review processes through reusable templates, export results to Excel for broader analysis, and compare provisions across matters. Potential use cases included M&A due diligence, litigation review, transaction comparison and knowledge management initiatives.
Importantly, NetDocuments maintains existing matter-level security and ethical walls, while users are reminded to exercise care when sharing exported information outside the platform.
