Morae today (29 September) formally unveils a new Legal Intelligence Platform, with its first module – MorAI Spend Intelligence – providing a tech + managed services offering that connects ELM, matter management, and law firm billing data into a single decision layer.
The new overarching platform unifies disconnected legal tech stacks into one decision layer. Rather than replacing systems of record, it sits above them and draws intelligence from them. Morae says that the cross-system intelligence allows legal teams to make decisions based on complete, organisation-wide context. Perhaps more importantly, by integrating with existing legal systems, the platform is designed to be live “in weeks,” avoiding lengthy replatforming or data migration projects.

Speaking to Legal IT Insider ahead of the launch, Morae’s founder and CEO Shahzad Bashir (pictured above), said that the company’s mantra is to ‘connect not replace’ systems, observing: “Unlike some of our competitors, we’re not going to give you a 1000-piece jigsaw but a solution that will have ease of adoption.” He added: “The groundbreaking part is that Intelligence is technology plus AI plus human in the last mile. The last mile is our domain experts.”
For its first verticalised spend module, by pairing billing-trained AI with expert review, Morae says that legal departments can leverage validated data to guide future strategy and budget decisions.
“Legal departments routinely approve rate increases and complex invoices without the cross-system insights they need to know if those charges are reasonable,” said Peter Fisher (pictured above), chief product officer at Morae. “We’re combining billing-trained AI with expert human review so legal leaders can verify what they should pay today while making smarter, data-backed decisions about where to direct spend tomorrow.”
The hybrid tech + human verification approach comes as legal teams struggle with the verification of AI outputs, which eat into efficiency gains.
Morae reports that in an early deployment with a global insurance company, the hybrid model doubled outside counsel cost savings from 8.5% to 18% while eliminating 14,000 hours of manual invoice review.
The target market for MorAI Spend Intelligence is Fortune 1000 and FTSE 350 corporate legal departments with $10M+ in annual outside counsel spend, particularly across insurance, financial services, healthcare, and technology verticals.
The ambition longer term will be to help both corporate legal teams and law firms. Bashir said: “The very genesis of Morae was helping law firms and legal departments to work better together. There are companies that do one or other, or that do strategy or technology, that do processes or data. Our answer is that those distinctions have no meaning. We believe that law firms and legal departments are just a different side of the same coin.”
