For all their talk about “the patriarchy” and “female empowerment,” female elected Democrats, particularly those in New York, don’t seem to have any problems covering themselves from head to toe when meeting with Islamic leaders during events that usually feature few female attendees.
The latest example comes from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who sported a hijab during a scarcely publicized mosque event that was held last week in what’s known as the “Little Yemen” neighborhood in the Big Apple. The bonus was that she was seen in photos sitting next to a Hamas- and Al-Qaeda-praising imam.
The Free Beacon’s Chuck Ross filed this report:
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wore a hijab during a visit last week to a Bronx mosque where the powerful New York Democrat sat alongside a cleric who once celebrated Hamas for “causing so much trouble for the Jews” and has hailed Osama bin Laden’s spiritual mentor.
Gillibrand, who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, appeared at the Bronx Muslim Center, located in New York City’s “Little Yemen,” on Sept. 21, according to photos posted by the center’s outreach director. The photos show Gillibrand wearing a pink headscarf and seated next to Hamud Alsilwi, a Yemeni cleric who has led the Bronx Muslim Center since 1998.

The Bronx mosque is a branch of the Muslim American Society, which federal prosecutors have described as an “overt arm” of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States.
Alsilwi has praised Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and hailed Sheikh Abdul Majeed al-Zindani, an influential Islamic scholar designated as a terrorist over his ties to bin Laden.

As noted earlier, Gillibrand is far from the only prominent elected female Democrat in New York who has taken this approach. We also saw this from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) during a May event designed “to celebrate the start of Eid al-Adha (the Muslim religious holiday that honors the importance of unwavering faith, submission, and charity).” With a heavy emphasis for women in particular on “submission,” no doubt.

Why weren’t there any women or diversity in the audience @AOC spoke to? I don’t see a single woman seated in that huge crowd. pic.twitter.com/pKoxu8ghNQ

This was the same AOC who, in October 2025, said this about Republican men:
Now, to the question earlier as well, when they talk about Republicans and their success online, they have been successful because they have also been very clear, especially digitally, about what they believe, that women are inferior that do not — and they do not deserve equal rights, that they believe that LGBTQ Americans are subhuman…
There was also New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s hijab moment from just 10 days before the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, while at the Islamic Cultural Center School in the Bronx:

In response to criticism at the time from her GOP gubernatorial election opponent, Bruce Blakeman, on how Islamism and feminism were incompatible, here’s what Hochul had to say:
“I just love it when men lecture women on whether or not they are a feminist,” Hochul said.
[…]
“I was invited as a guest, and I always wear the appropriate attire, whether I am going to a temple, whether I am going to an Orthodox community or whether I am going to a catholic church in the Vatican,” Hochul said.
Except… hijabs are required in certain male-dominated Islamic cultures, and if that hadn’t been the case in this instance, Hochul wouldn’t have been wearing one.
What is it with New York female politicians? Hochul in a hijab.🧕 AOC in a hijab.🧕 Gillibrand in a hijab.🧕 Next they’ll be wearing burquas, but we won’t recognize them cuz their faces will be covered. https://t.co/7bp18ZtJTK

These women and their brazen, craven inconsistencies make my head hurt. They truly do.
