Salisbury University president’s office backs ‘Transgender Health Equity Symposium’ event

Salisbury University will host its annual “Transgender Health Equity Symposium” in November, with transgender activist and journalist Erin Reed as its keynote speaker.

The university has sponsored the symposium, which is free to attend, since 2023. This year’s theme is “Closing Gaps in Care: Designing Systems Built for All.”

The symposium is scheduled for Nov. 20, which activists recognize as Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“Salisbury University’s annual transgender health equity symposium seeks to advance interprofessional care to improve the health and wellbeing of agender, transgender, genderqueer, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people living on the Eastern Shore,” a description states.

The event’s total budget is $6,500, including speaker fees, a university spokesperson told Campus Reform. While Salisbury is a public university, the school is also soliciting private donations.

“The symposium is one of more than 200 public events at SU this semester,” the spokesperson added, specifically citing an Oct. 2 performance by the U.S. Marine Band and an exhibit on celebrations of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, which is open through Dec. 18.

The symposium is supported by multiple university offices and departments, including the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, the College of Health and Human Services, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, and the Psychology Department.

The symposium’s keynote speaker, Erin Reed, identifies as a “transgender woman” journalist and activist.
