Dual UK-Iranian National Arrested in RAF Fairford Plot Investigation

Police have arrested a dual UK-Iranian national, 27, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 in connection with the RAF Fairford plot.

Officers made the arrest in Westminster, London. Police searched two properties in the same area.

The U.S. uses the base to carry out strikes on Iran, which is one reason why the police have been investigating whether Iran had a hand in the alleged plot.

They also questioned a 26-year-old national under caution. From Sky News:

Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans said: “The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry.

“As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement. I’d like to thank the public for their continued support and patience whilst we work through this investigation.”

The five men arrested on Sunday remain on police bail. Four of the men live in Westminster.

One of them may have led law enforcement to this UK-Iranian national.

The police insisted they released the men on bail as an “investigative decision.”

The arrest comes a day after Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC that the government believes Iran had a part in whatever plan the five men wanted to execute at the RAF Fairford air base.

“We will say more in due course, but we can confirm our belief, that we believe Iran to have played a part,” Burnham said. “Of course it remains an ongoing, complex and serious police investigation, and of course we are working closely with our colleagues in the United States of America.”

The bail release shocked many because after the police arrested the five men, President Donald Trump said, “We had them under view for a long time, and we got them.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood makes it sound like the police foiled an attack.

“To all those who mean us harm and plot violence on our soil, let this be a reminder you will never defeat us,” Mahmood declared.

However, investigators did not find any explosives during the search of the vans at the air base. They did find quite a bit of petrol, though.
