Israel Strikes Hezbollah Terror Targets in Southern Lebanon After Troops Attacked

The Israeli military struck terrorist targets in southern Lebanon on Saturday following a Hezbollah attack on its soldiers. “The Israeli army said it targeted alleged Hezbollah infrastructure in Ansar and Nabatieh in response to an operation against its troops, adding that it would continue acting against perceived threats,” Reuters reported.

The Times of Israel noted that the military “struck Hezbollah infrastructure in response to an attack by the terror group on Israeli troops” in the security buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The attack occurred near the Ali al-Taher Ridge, an area near the Israeli border riddled with deep and fortified terror tunnels. Despite a news ceasefire deal agreed in late June, the Iranian-backed terrorist group has continued its attacks on Israeli soldiers securing the area.

“In response to an action by the Hezbollah terrorist organization against IDF soldiers in the Ali al-Taher Ridge, which is located in the Security Zone where IDF soldiers are operating, the IDF struck overnight (Saturday) Hezbollah terror infrastructure in the areas of Nabatieh and Ansar in southern Lebanon,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Saturday.

The IDF vowed  that it “will not allow the Hezbollah terrorist organization to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will continue to operate to remove threats.”

Hezbollah’s attack was directed at Israeli troops patrolling the security buffer agreed under the ceasefire agreement with the Lebanese government. “In Lebanon, the IDF still holds the buffer zone in the south and is effectively operating under a forced ceasefire with Hezbollah. Israeli troops remain in largely static positions, a posture that can leave them exposed,” the Israeli TV channel i24NEWS reported on Saturday.

Under the U.S.-backed ceasefire deal agreed in June, Israel will hand over parts of the security buffer to the Lebanese army as part of a pilot project. Further Israeli withdrawal is subject to Lebanon’s ability to prevent Hezbollah from regrouping and restoring its fortifications and tunnel networks along the Israeli border — an unlikely prospect considering Beirut’s dismal track record in standing up to terrorism. “The pilot program for the Lebanese army to begin dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure is moving slowly and remains limited in scope, particularly after the failure of previous efforts to rely on Lebanese state forces to confront the organization and prevent another war with Israel,” the TV channel added.

Iran renews threats against Israel

To make matters worse, the Iranian regime has come to the aid of its proxy terrorist group, threatening to attack Israel if the operation against Hezbollah’s southern Lebanese base continues, Israel’s Ynetnews reported on Saturday:

The strikes came a day after Lebanese reports said Iran had warned that an Israeli attack on the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge could draw Tehran directly into the escalating confrontation.

Official sources told Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed television Friday that “Tehran conveyed a direct message to the relevant parties that an Israeli attack in the Ali al-Taher area would be met by Iran entering the cycle of escalation.”
