NYU Law School to Host Lecture on ‘Socialism After AI’

I’m starting to think all of the AI panic on the left may be about something else.

Campus Reform reports:

NYU Law to host ‘Socialism after AI’ lecture on ‘blind spot in socialist thought’

New York University School of Law will stream a lecture titled “Socialism after AI” on Oct. 5 that examines artificial intelligence through socialist economic theory.

The event, held at NYU Law in New York City, will feature a streamed lecture by writer and researcher Evgeny Morozov, with London School of Economics Professor Lea Ypi listed as chair.

“The old socialist calculation debate asked whether markets or planners could allocate resources more rationally,” the event description states, adding that AI now “radicalises” a shift toward “creativity, experimentation and worldmaking.”

The description argues that AI “exposes a deeper blind spot in socialist thought” and says the lecture will examine “who controls the infrastructures through which societies learn, create, remember, govern and make worlds.”

An NYU Law spokesperson told Campus Reform that student organizations host speakers representing varying perspectives.

“Student groups at NYU law regularly schedule speakers who represent a broad range of viewpoints on matters of law and policy. We believe in the importance of free expression and open inquiry,” the spokesperson said.

NYU identifies Morozov as a researcher who studies technology’s political and social implications. The university notes that Politico named him among its 28 most influential Europeans in 2018.
