UC Santa Cruz college committed to ‘social justice’ requires freshmen to study ‘Institutionalized Oppression’
Freshmen in the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Oakes College must complete a course called “Communicating Diversity for a Just Society,” which includes a section on “Institutionalized Oppression.”
Oakes, a residential college at UC Santa Cruz, describes itself as a “vibrant multicultural community committed to social justice, academic excellence, and freedom from oppression.”
“Communicating Diversity for a Just Society” is divided into four thematic units: “Institutionalized Oppression,” “Social Identity Formations,” “Felt in the Body,” and “Resistance and Social Action.”
The course “introduces students to university-level reading, writing, and critical thinking while exploring the intersections of identity and social change,” according to its description.
It further “helps first-quarter first-year students build deeper, critical connections by engaging with some of the most challenging and relevant issues that face us in the world.”
“We do this by examining the intersections between reading, personal identity, and social justice,” the description continues. “In our readings, discussions, and assignments, we seek to answer questions about how materials we read connect with our cultural, religious, sexual, ethnic, class, racial, and gender identities.”
Sylvane Vaccarino-Ruiz, one of several instructors listed as teaching the course this fall, focuses his research on “participatory action research approaches to working with Latinx/Chicanx marginalized youth and young adults towards empowerment and radical healing.”
Another listed instructor, Andrea Seeger, has interests in “Literature, Writing, Discrimination and Inequality.”
