Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen after the Iranian-backed terrorist group attacked the kingdom’s oil facilities.
“Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said Wednesday that Saudi-backed forces had launched dozens of airstrikes overnight across four Yemeni provinces, after rebel attacks on Saudi Arabia ignited fires at several oil facilities and wounded dozens of people,” the Associated Press reported. “Houthi spokesman Nasruddin Amer said on X on Wednesday that Saudi-backed forces had launched 32 airstrikes overnight across Yemen’s provinces of Taiz, Hodeida, Jawf and Marib.”

This follows reports that Saudi-backed forces were advancing on the ground. According to Reuters, “In recent days, Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have launched a multi-pronged offensive on Houthi-held areas after the group attempted to advance on government positions. The government says it aims to recapture all Houthi-held territory.”
Qatari-state-run Al Jazeera reported that “Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces are intensifying their counteroffensive against the Houthis as fighting spreads across Yemen.” The Houthis control most of the country’s populated areas. The internationally recognised government of Yemen holds two southern provinces.

Government forces claimed to have captured a high-ranking Houthi terror commander amid the ongoing offensive. “Yemen’s government-aligned forces said on Tuesday they had captured a senior Houthi commander and several fighters after fierce clashes in southwestern Taiz province,” the London-based Arab Weekly reported.

The Saudi military response came after a wave of Houthi drone attacks aimed at the country’s civilian population and oil facilities. “A wave of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia Tuesday wounded more than 70 people and ignited fires at several oil facilities and utilities in the kingdom’s southern region,” NBC News reported. “The attacks ignited fires at several oil facilities and utilities in Saudi Arabia’s southern region, the kingdom’s Energy Ministry said in a statement.”
Since October 7, 2023, the Houthis have declared war on maritime trade in the region, attacking and hijacking Western-owned ships under the banner of fighting Israel. Supporting the Iranian campaign of terror, they have been firing ballistic missiles and drones at Israel.
For months, Houthis have been attacking Saudi refineries and oil tankers with drones and ballistic missiles. Backed by Iran’s Islamic Guard (IRGC), they are also trying to block Saudi ships and tankers in the Red Sea Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, threatening the region’s second-busiest waterway after the Strait of Hormuz.
