UAB continues offering LGBTQ health certificate after two years of zero reported students
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s LGBTQ Health and Wellbeing certificate recorded zero students in fall 2024 and fall 2025, the school’s self-reported enrollment information reveals.
The data show that the certificate reported one student in fall 2023, when coursework for the program began, before dropping to zero in fall 2024 and remaining at zero in fall 2025.
The report states that students are counted under their primary degree program, so students pursuing the certificate while in another program may be excluded. The certificate is housed under the School of Public Health.
Despite its zero reported enrollment, the university continues to advertise the certificate on its website. Only one other School of Public Health graduate certificate, Disability Health Studies, recorded zero students in fall 2025.
The certificate, which takes 15 credit hours to complete, offers “advanced education in LGBTQ health to graduate and post-doctoral students at UAB seeking to enhance their skills regarding LGBTQ-related research,” its description states.
The certificate “will prepare students and future professionals to have an immediate impact on LGBTQ health in the Deep South and throughout the nation.”
The university’s graduate certificate page states that students must complete “LGBTQ Health and Wellbeing Service Learning” and “Introduction to LGBTQ Health.”
The Service Learning course examines “policy and programmatic approaches to LGBTQ health and health and wellbeing, as well as the concrete advocacy and leadership skills needed to address the most pressing inequities faced by LGBTQ communities in Alabama and the Deep South.”
Elective course options include “Anthropology of Gender,” “Counseling Diverse Populations,” and “LGBTQ Research Methods.”
