U. Illinois Chicago Students Protest Inclusion of Customs and Border Protection in Job Fair

So many people just need to grow up and get a grip.

Campus Reform reports:

University of Illinois Chicago protested U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Students at the University of Illinois Chicago protested U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) planned participation in a Sept. 23 career fair and called on the university to adopt additional protections for “undocumented” students.

Mexican Students de Aztlán (MeSA), a student organization affiliated with UIC’s Latino Cultural Center, organized opposition after students received messages through the university’s Handshake career platform promoting CBP recruiting opportunities.

“As a campus claiming to be a ‘Hispanic-serving institution’ that touts its diversity among students, faculty and staff, it is a slap in the face to the undocumented and international students who attend the school for UIC to host CBP on campus,” MeSA wrote in an Instagram statement on Sept. 21.

CBP ultimately did not attend the career fair. The agency’s Regulatory Audit Group had been expected to recruit for accounting-related positions, while promotional material sent to students advertised opportunities to become U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Students nevertheless held a protest Sept. 23 calling for stronger protections for immigrant students and demanding that UIC become a “sanctuary campus.”

The protest was not MeSA’s first involvement in activism surrounding federal immigration enforcement. The organization also protested after a federal court struck down provisions granting in-state tuition benefits to certain illegal alien students.

The dispute at UIC follows similar opposition to federal immigration agencies recruiting on college campuses.
