- 21 Aug — Essay: Sets the tone for the exam. Two essays are attempted from a choice of themes spanning philosophy, governance, economy, society, and current affairs.
- 22 Aug — GS I & GS II: GS I covers Indian heritage, culture, history, geography, and society; GS II covers polity, governance, social justice, and international relations.
- 23 Aug — GS III & GS IV: GS III covers economy, environment, security, and science & technology; GS IV is the Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude paper.
- 29 Aug — Language & English: Qualifying papers; candidates need minimum marks here but these don’t count toward the final merit ranking.
- 30 Aug — Optional I & II: The two optional subject papers close out the exam, testing depth in the candidate’s chosen subject.
UPSC Mains 2026 Begins with Essay Paper
The Civil Services Main Examination is the second and arguably the most demanding stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Unlike the objective-type Preliminary Examination, Mains tests a candidate’s ability to understand complex issues, organise ideas and present well-reasoned arguments within strict time and word limits.
UPSC Mains 2026 begins on Friday, 21 August, with the 250-mark Essay Paper.
There is no afternoon examination on 21 August. Candidates will return on Saturday for General Studies Papers I and II, while General Studies III and IV will be conducted on Sunday.
The remaining qualifying language and Optional Subject papers will be held on the following weekend.
UPSC Mains 2026 Exam Pattern at a Glance
The Civil Services Mains written examination consists of nine descriptive papers.
Paper-A in an Indian Language and Paper-B in English are qualifying in nature. Their marks are not added to the final merit score.
The papers counted for merit are Essay, four General Studies papers and two Optional Subject papers. Each of these carries 250 marks, taking the total written merit score to 1,750 marks.
Candidates who qualify the written examination are called for the Personality Test/Interview carrying 275 marks, making the Civil Services Examination final merit total 2,025 marks.
